The third and final Mythos assignment I did was for the Mythos Dreamlands expansion set. I was so happy to be asked to contribute because Dreamlands was my favorite Lovecraft novel, and dreaming and dream-research has always been very important to me. I did four cards in this set, and my drawing of Ilarnek was chosen to be the cover image on the Dreamlands rule book!

I did all the Mythos cards, as well as my work for Heresy, Kingdom Come in the period between 1996 and 1999, when I was unemployed after a layoff, and was a full-time artist. I had hopes to stay a freelance illustrator, but I couldn’t get enough work to pay for my NYC apartment, so I got a job in 1999 at R/Greenberg Associates, a film special effects house in NYC.

Mysteries of Thalarion was a fun card. I love the tentacle shadows, inferring a monster instead of showing it. Plus, the girl peeking out from her hands was also an element of fun. I tried to sneak in bits of humor into the dark horror that is Cthulhu.

And finally, in the Vortex image, I had fun incorporating magic sigils in the vortex. I wanted to show a kind of “old magic”, and I thought that arcane sigils would do the trick.
