My new book, Willoughby’s World of Wonder, A Field Guide to Strange Beasts & Curious Creatures is a compendium of 136 unusual and strange beasties. It also has an entire section about the Fey Folk. There are faeries, sprites, elves, pixies, and more; this blog post is about Faeries. Above, you see the first sign of faeries, which is a Faerie Ring. This is a ring of mushrooms which indicate a portal into the Fey Realm, if you are careless enough to stand inside it at the wrong time. Beware Faerie Rings, because you never know when the Ring may transport you into the Fey Realm, a place few escape.

This is an example of a Fearie Door. These are doorways into the Fey Realm that are used by faeries, sprites, pixies, and other fey creatures. They may be large, or they may be small. The Doors are often in trees, but may also be hidden in a large rock or ivy-covered hillside. It is impossible for mortals to find and open a Faerie Door, so the only way to see them is to witness a fey creature opening it themselves.

Here we see a Faerie Cat, an unusual fey creature that lives inside of a Faerie Door, guarding the entrance. Faerie Cats roam the woods at night on their mysterious errands, and it is best to avoid them. Do not attempt to enter the Faerie Door when the Cat is away, or else you may be trapped in the Fey Realm, for it is said that if you eat of the food in the Fey Realm, you cannot escape.

Above we see two Faeries on their way to an unknown destination. Faeries are neither good nor evil, they simply do not care about the affairs of mortals. So do not interfere in the deeds of Faeries, for they do not suffer any obstacles, and do not ask them for any favors as well. They are concerned about their own world, not ours, and it is best to keep your distance.
