On The Wings of Angels

The Messenger, colored pencil, 30 x 40″ (1999)
This drawing was given to Bishop Don Taylor, when he retired to his home in Kingston, Jamaica.

We are surrounded by the invisible Messengers of God. They fill the air all around us, yet we do not see them. In 1999, I felt the urge to do a series of angel drawings. Actually, at the time when these were done, my life made some radical changes! In one year, I started my Dream-Dollars project, which resulted in a 15-year body of work of moneyart; I started at my job at R/GA, where I worked for 18 years; and my wife and I started going to our church, All Angels, where we have been attending for 20 years now. 1999 was one heckuva year! Perhaps the angel drawings portended something….

Growth Angel, colored pencil, 20 x 30″ (1999)

The Growth Angel drawing is based on a quote from the Talmud: “Over every blade of grass stands an angels saying ‘Grow'” That verse inspired me to start this series. I believe that Growth Angel was the first drawing in the series, and I redrew it for my coloring book, Angelikon.

Amy’s Guardian, colored pencil, 20 x 30″ (1999)

The third drawing in this series is called Amy’s Guardian. Tradition has it that we each have a guardian angel watching over us. If that’s so, I certainly put my guardian angel to the test in my 20’s! Amy’s Guardian is also in my coloring book, Angelikon, redrawn from this original.
